“DELICATE BALANCE”

HAS BEEN SELECTED AS HIGHLY HONORED IN CONSERVATION SINGLE IMAGE OF NATURE’S BEST PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNATIONAL AWARDS 2024

Delicate Balance: Everything in nature requires a delicate balance. A balance between earth, air and water, as well as between all of earth’s inhabitants. After a long slumber, a Polar bear rises each autumn in Churchill, Canada. Ice is forming on Hudson Bay and hunger is drawing polar bears out of the prairies and towards the newly formed ice. But this small town of Churchill is in the middle of this migratory path. As history and conflict has evolved through many decades, the Polar bears that enter the town are pushed out for the safety of the inhabitants. If the polar bear doesn’t leave town, it is darted and air lifted to the edge of the bay. On this November day, I felt conflicted about witnessing a polar bear airlifted by net and helicopter, another delicate balance for this giant apex predator now dandling up in the air. When I learned he would be brought to the edge of the soon to be freezing bay, I breathed a little easier. As a steward of the planet, I feel a moral obligation to protect and preserve this delicate balance. It is my hope, that my photography and stories can reach millions of people so they too can be aware and foster connections with nature and make a difference!
